GROSS NATIONAL HAPPINESS

Gross National Happiness (GNH) – Bhutan’s Unique Development Philosophy

Gross National Happiness (GNH) is Bhutan’s unique approach to development, introduced in the 1970s by His Majesty the Fourth King, Jigme Singye Wangchuck. Unlike conventional economic measures like Gross Domestic Product (GDP), GNH focuses on the well-being and happiness of the people as the ultimate goal of progress.

GNH is built on four main pillars:

  1. Sustainable and Equitable Socio-economic Development
  2. Environmental Conservation
  3. Preservation and Promotion of Culture
  4. Good Governance

These pillars are supported by nine domains, including psychological well-being, health, education, community vitality, and time use. Together, they ensure that development in Bhutan remains balanced, inclusive, and sustainable.

This philosophy guides Bhutan’s policies and decisions, ensuring that economic growth never comes at the expense of cultural heritage, the environment, or social harmony. Over the years, GNH has gained global recognition as an alternative model of development, inspiring discussions worldwide on how to build happier and healthier societies.
