Mount Jomolhari (7,326 m), located on the Bhutan–Tibet border, is one of the most revered and sacred peaks in the Himalayas. In Bhutanese tradition, it is considered the abode of the goddess Jomo, a powerful deity associated with fertility, protection, and prosperity. Local legends say that offerings to Jomo bring blessings of good harvests, protection from misfortune, and children to families seeking them. Because of this deep reverence, climbing Jomolhari is strictly forbidden, and like all of Bhutan’s high peaks, it remains unclimbed—preserved in its spiritual purity.
For centuries, the valleys and passes around Jomolhari served as important trade routes connecting Bhutan and Tibet. Yak herders and nomadic families guided caravans of salt, wool, and barley across the high passes, leaving behind trails that today form part of the Jomolhari Loop Trek route. Many of these nomadic families still live in traditional yak-hair tents in the high meadows, and trekkers passing through can witness this centuries-old way of life.
One of the trek’s most significant stops is Jangothang (Jomolhari Base Camp), a sacred campsite beneath the towering face of the mountain. Historically, it has been a resting point for pilgrims, herders, and travelers, who would perform rituals to honor the mountain goddess before continuing their journey. Even today, locals consider the area blessed and often visit for religious offerings.
